\"\"<\/a>As part of my training toward an attempt on Everest<\/a>, I have decided to nip out to Ecuador for some time at altitude and some training.\u00a0This will also give an opportunity to test communications equipment and blogging capabilities so that any issues can be resolved before I head out to attempt Everest.<\/p>\n

I will be joined for this expedition by George Ming Shi who used to be in the Assynt Mountain Rescue Team with me.\u00a0The logisitics for the Ecuador expedition are being organised by Adventure Peaks<\/a> from the Lake District.<\/p>\n

This expedition should combine the opportunity to climb wonderful snow capped peaks with\u00a0sufficient rest days to absorb the culture, visit the colourful Indian market in Otavalo and the hot springs of Papallacta.<\/p>\n

Lying at the northern tip of the Andean Chain, Ecuador is an astonishingly beautiful country that has some of the highest volcanoes in the world.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0expedition should tackle six of the best volcanic peaks in Ecuador.<\/p>\n

Our itinerary states that we commence our “journey from Otavalo, near Quito, where we can absorb the atmosphere and cultural diversity of the vibrant markets and craft stalls. We initially climb Fuya Fuya (4250m), next are Illinizas (5116m), Imbabura (4600m) and Cayambe (5790m) an ideal training peak where you can either refresh or learn glacier skills before making the ascent and moving onto the majestic Cotopaxi (5897m). The image of this highest of active volcanoes is an entrancing sight.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>George and I have asked for the expedition to be extended so that we can also attempt Chimborazo (6310m). Chimborazo is the highest peak in Ecuador and the views of the surrounding natural wonders and volcanic peaks are meant to be a spectacle to behold.<\/p>\n

Due to the Earth’s equatorial bulge, Chimborazo is the farthest point from the centre of the Earth<\/a>.\u00a0If mountain heights were measured from the centre of the Earth then Chimborazo would be more than 1 km higher than Everest.<\/p>\n

So one reason for wanting to go to Ecuador and attempt Chimborazo is that if I am successful on Everest and Chimborazo then there should be no debate on whether I have ascended the planetary high point.<\/p>\n
